Jonathan Irizarry 2009: Behind the Scenes Texas bodybuilder Jonathan Irizarry is no stranger to the competition stage. The veteran of numerous local bodybuilding shows and several teen titles decided in the early summer of 2008 to take his bodybuilding more seriously. He hooked up with Sagi Kalev, a Dallas-based personal trainer more widely known as the cover model on numerous bodybuilding and physique magazines. Shortly thereafter Jonathan won the Junior Lightweight class at the 2008 Musclemania Universe and placed sixth one month later at the 2008 NPC Teen Nationals. At that point Jonathan and Sagi decided to make the 2009 NPC Teen Nationals their primary target show. With three more shows under his belt later in 2008 and earlyin 2009, Jonathan and Sagi felt they were ready to make the journey to Pittsburgh in 2009 with a bigger, harder Jonathan and high expectations. This DVD picks up the story on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, as Jonathan, at an Iving, Texas hotel, prepares for an early-morning flight to Pittsburgh. The story continues one day later on Thursday evening in the Steel City, where he concentrates on diet and catching up on some much needed rest. On Friday the preprations become more critical, and Sagi has arrived to observe, coach, motivate and fine tune Jonathan's physique with an extensive look at his diet, physique and posing. Saturday morning finds Jonathan, Sagi and Jonathan's family arriving early at the host hotel for breakfast and last minute preparations. Sagi meticulously applies a final coat of color enhancer to Jonathan's ripped physique just mintues before he steps on stage as a light heavyweight in the teen class. Sagi and Jonathan head off to a photo shoot and later return to the hotel to talk strategy and hit some poses that show Jonathan's in the best shape of his life. After the evening show -- and what appeared at the time to be a second-place finish for Jonathan in the light heavyweight class -- Sagi, Jonathan and lightweight competitor Chris Hunte talk bodybuilding and hit some poses at the hotel. (Chris, who lives in Fort Worth, Texas, won the lightweight class in both the Teen and Collegiate divisions. Another Texas teen, Uriah McGee, won the Teen middleweight class at the Saturday night show.) On Sunday afternoon Jonathan headed to a local gym to demonstrate 20 different exercises that can be used to help build the killer biceps that have become one of his physique hallmarks. You'll see an amazing display of teenage guns as Jonathan moves from one exercise to another. On Sunday evening two Texas competitors got a pleasant surprise via a press release from NPC President Jim Manion. Because the light heavyweight class winner (who also won the Teen overall Saturday night) was found to be 20 years old at the time of the competition, he was declared ineligible by NPC officials. Jonathan therefore became the Teen light heavyweight winner and Uriah was awarded the overall Teen title. Our look at Jonathan's 2009 Pittsburgh experience ends on Monday as he packs up and heads for the airport and a plane ride back to Texas -- where he, Chris and Uriah made it a Dallas area clean sweep of the top Teen trophies at the nationals.
